Be Cool to the Pizza Delivery Dude

Listen to “Be Cool to the Pizza Delivery Dude.” Describe and respond to Adams’s argument. In what ways has Adams tailored her argument for the audio medium? Does Adams’s essay give you any ideas for how you will produce your own audio argument?

Adam’s argument is that being cool to the pizza delivery dude exemplifies our good qualities or improve our character. Firstly, not being angry at the pizza delivery dude who pushes your way and passes you in traffic takes humility and forgiveness. Secondly, treating the pizza delivery dudes nicely means that you empathise with them, knowing that life is harder for them and you have been through their situation. Thirdly, the delivery dudes earn their money for their hard/honest work. They do not steal money and make others unemployed. They earn what they get and this is honourable. Lastly, it is a practice of equality to be nice to the delivery dudes, not discriminating against them because of their social status, etc.

Adam has tailored this essay to the audio medium by making it sound more colloquial. She does not present her argument in a dry way that an essay may be presented. Instead, she uses phrases like: “principle 1” to engage the audience and make it seem like casual speech.

Making the argument more colloquial in order to engage the audience is something that I will consider when making my own audio argument having listened to Adam’s recording.

  1. Hi Selina,

First a couple of grammar points:

[ Firstly, not being angry at the pizza delivery dude who pushes your way (not sure about this phrase) and passes you in traffic takes humility and forgiveness.]

[Secondly, treating the pizza delivery dudes nicely means that you empathise with them, knowing that life is harder for them and you have been through their situation.] (This one is a run-on sentence after the word “and.”)

You do a good job of describing Adams’s argument. The point-by-point technique is particularly helpful. I wonder how you might expand on the last paragraphs of your post to look a little more in-depth at how Adams uses colloquial speech to make her argument more accessible. I would have also liked to hear a little more about how you plan to use what you’ve thought about here to generate your own audio argument essay.
